Canale Black River Malbec 2014 – A Malbec from Patagonia Shines

Tasting Note: If you need proof that not all malbecs from Argentina are the same, try this Argentinean malbec from down south in Patagonia.

Not to be outshined by its more popular sibling to the north in Mendoza, there is something uniquely distinct about this malbec. It has a taste that is infused with more minerality and sharpness than most malbecs.

Deep violet in color and taste with thick legs, there is pronounced acidity. Wet limestone and cherry flavors with rich complexity concentrate at the midpoint of your palate. Even though Patagonian malbecs are not as widely available, this would definitely be an area to spend more focused time exploring.

Bottle Note: The Canale Family vineyards are situated in the Rio Negro Valley in Patagonia and are amongst the most southerly in the world. A dry growing season, with hot days and cold nights, helps to produce wonderfully rip and generous fruit. The winery has recently been fully modernized. Made from carefully selected malbec grapes, this wine is intense, harmonic and has great varietal expression.
