Chateau Megyer, Dry Furmint 2014, Tokaji, Hungary
Tasting Note: As a single-varietal-bottled wine, experience the furmint grape which contributes to the blend of some of the world’s most cherished dessert wines.
Pale lemon in color this wine has an aromatic nose of red apple, Asian pear, white peach and quince as well as notes of lime zest.
On the palate the dry, medium-bodied furmint expresses a tart-fruit infused roundness on the attack and completes with notes of lemon citrus.
Medium-plus in acidity, the wine is somewhat thin in texture mid-palate.
As with all good blending grapes which tend to contribute to a blend and rarely get an opportunity shine on their own, you can definitely observe that furmint adds acidity and tart fruit to the famed Tokai dessert wine blends.
I’d be keen to have the opportunity to sample more of this grape as a single varietal and isolate even more its contribution to the dessert wines the world loves so much.
