Robert Stein, Shiraz Viognier 2017, Mudgee, New South Wales, Australia
Tasting Note: When people think of shiraz, they often think of an overpowering wine; this wine shows that subtlety exists in Australian wine making.
A jubilant, shiraz-viognier red blend made in a Northern-Rhone-syrah style.
Medium-intensity ruby in color, this wine has an aromatic, medium-plus-intensity nose of black plum, raspberry puree, blackberry, bramble with floral hints of violet, blossom and dried sage leaf.
On the palate the dry, medium-plus-bodied shiraz is creamy with medium-intensity flavors suggested on the nose supported by ripe, medium tannin.
The wine is silky in texture with a complex, floral midpalate and hints of orange citrus.
Bottle Note: Johann Stein arrived in Australia in 1838 bringing with him select cuttings and viticultural expertise to supervise operations at Macarthur’s Camden vineyards. Generations of winemaking experience are evident in the Robert Stein portfolio of regional wines. The 2017 season provided some very ideal grape growing conditions, creating great fruit concentration and balance in most varieties. This shiraz was hand harvested from our special 1976 block N, and was co-fermented with 4% viognier in small open fermenters. Winemaker, Jacob Stein.
