Smith-Madrone Vineyards and Winery, Riesling 2016, Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley, California
Tasting Note: A curious, Spring Mountain, Napa Valley riesling that combines some of the grape’s classic, old world elements but in a decidedly new-world style.
Pale-intensity lemon-green in color, this wine has an aromatic, medium-plus-intensity nose of quince, green pear, petrol, blossom, chalk and lemon-lime citrus zest.
On the palate the dry, medium-plus-bodied riesling has a creamy texture with medium-plus-intensity, green-fruit flavors suggested on the nose supported by medium-plus acidity and completing with a medium-plus, finish.
While most rieslings are steely in texture, this wine’s somewhat creamy texture buffers riesling’s usual tart acidity.
This riesling could enjoyed on its own or paired with a dish with a mild-to-medium hint of spice.
Bottle Note: Founded in 1971 at the top of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley, Smith-Madrone is run by brothers Stuart and Charles Smith. The steep dry farmed vineyards are planted in vividly red and rocky volcanic Aiken stoney clay loam. Coupled with the cool mountain temperatures our grapes produce wines of intense flavor, structure and longevity, with a distinct personality. All our wines are estate grown and bottled.
