Delheim, Merlot 2014, Stellenbosch, South Africa
Tasting Note: A merlot with bite and concentration thanks to an addition of petit verdot.
Deep-intensity ruby in color this wine has an aromatic nose of black plum, cassis, black currant violet and vanilla baking spice.
On the palate the dry, medium-plus bodied merlot has medium-plus flavor intensity with concentrated flavors of black fruit.
The wine spent 15 months in new French oak and is a combination of 84% merlot and 11% petit verdot.
Bottle Note: Cool south-westerly breezes and severe lead removal led to a reduction in herbaceous flavors and an increase in berry components. The rich chocolate, spice and fresh mint flavors were enhanced by 15 months maturation in French oak. High on the slopes on the Simonsberg lies the beautiful Delheim, home of the Sperling family since 1951, their hospitality and dedication to making wines of character, makes Delheim “worth the journey.”
