Viña Progreso, Overground Cabernet Franc 2020, Progreso, Uruguay
Tasting Note: A cabernet franc from Uruguay done in a ripe, new-world style that tends toward black fruit rather than red fruits.
Deep-intensity ruby in color with some garnet around the edges, this wine has an aromatic nose of blackberry compote, leather, strawberry, and rhubarb with a hint of rosemary.
On the palate the dry, full-bodied cabernet franc had medium-plus-intensity flavors suggested on the nose supported by medium acidity, slightly-grippy medium tannin and completing with a long finish.
The wine is jammy and straightforward.
This wine leans more into cabernet than cabernet franc.
Bottle Note: The village of Progreso, 25 km. North of the sea, is in the center of what is probably the best grape growing area of Uruguay. Old traditions of European heritage meet the powerful Uruguayan personality and exotic New World grapes to produce wines of outstanding quality. At Viña Progreso we practice the traditional, late harvest and small yields viticulture that results in ripe intense fruit. Closely controlled fermentation and long maceration in small vats, gives us a marvelous build up in the strength, structure and complexity of the style, without sacrificing the hallmarks of elegant, crystal clear varietal fruit flavor.
