Sunce Winery & Vineyard, Nebbiolo 2004, St. Olof Vineyard, Clear Lake, California
Tasting Note: A robust Nebbiolo from California with concentration, body and flavor intensity that shows the impressive aging potential of the notoriously-fickle grape.
Deep-intensity purple in color, this wine has an aromatic, medium-plus-intensity nose of black plum, red currant, red cherry, raspberry and violet blossom.
On the palate the dry, medium-plus-bodied Nebbiolo is medium-plus-in flavor intensity with concentrated red-and-black-fruit flavors supported by medium-plus acidity and grippy, ripe, medium-plus tannin.
There is midpalate complexity, earthiness and balance between the fruit and tannin structure.
California can definitely compete in the Nebbiolo game.
Bottle Note: Sunce is a family winery located in the Russian River Valley appellation of Sonoma County. We specialize in small artisan lots of varietal wine and classic blends. “To find eternity in a grain of sand or in a drop of wine.” This Nebbiolo, aka “The Noble Grape” is very representative of its Italian origins exuding intense aromas of plums, truffle and cedar following through to a full-bodied palate laden with ripe cherries, violets and black licorice, finishing long with velvety tannins and an ultra-rich aftertaste. Only 13 barrels made.
