Campo Viejo, Rioja Reserva 2008, Rioja, Spain
Tasting Note: This rioja is deep ruby in color with aromas of tobacco, wet leaves and black pepper spice on the nose.
Aromas continue to the palate along with black fruit and flavors.
Medium bodied, and dry with a medium-plus acid finish that wipes your tongue clean, this wine is a solid rioja and also one that shows signs of having softened and matured with age for those who prefer older wines.
I enjoyed this rioja on a Friday night, but I think it would have worked better opened midweek.
Bottle Note: Since our pioneering founder Jose Ortiguela’s decision to found Campo Viejo in the heart of Rioja, we continue to create expressive and characterful wines that celebrate the richness of the region. Grapes: Tempranillo 85%, Graciano 10% and Mazuelo 5%. Tasting: Rich aromas of wile cherries, pepper and oak. Balanced and elegant with soft tannins. Ageing: 18 months barrel plus 18 months bottle. Food pairing: Beef or lamb, grilled foods, strong cheeses. Serve at: 61-63°F.
